Dr. Burkey teaches a variety of Journalism major and core courses for the Communications Department curriculum, including digital journalism, feature writing, digital magazine production, reporting and news gathering, news and information literacy, cross-cultural journalism, multimedia interviewing practices, media industries, photojournalism, newswriting for the media, media and society, and the senior project.
Dr. Burkey’s research consistently focuses on media literacy, media memory, and digital culture in journalism, cultural heritage, digital humanities, social media, and digital media production. His research has appeared in the Journal of Creative Communications, Media Practice and Education, Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education, Journal of Communication Inquiry, and Explorations in Media Ecology Journal. Dr. Burkey won Top Faculty Paper for the Participatory Journalism Interest Group at the 2017 AEJMC Conference and has presented research at the International Communications Association (ICA), Association for Educators in Journalism & Mass Communication (AEJMC), 2nd International Conference on Communications and Media Studies, Western States Communication Association (WSCA, LSI Division), Pacific Sociology Association (PSA), Western Social Science Association (WSSA), and several other regional academic conferences on journalism and media studies.
Dr. Burkey assisted in the redesigning of the new Journalism major curriculum and has served on numerous departmental, college, and university committees. He is the Editor of the COM alumni publication, Compendium; has served as the CSUDH Program Coordinator for the South Bay Digital Media Arts Consortium grant; and was a founding member and former officer of the Untenured Faculty Organization (UFO). Dr. Burkey has received several partnership awards as an Academy Advisory Board member for the Centinela Valley Union High School District and reviewed manuscripts for Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Mass Communication & Society, Communication & Media Studies, the Journal of Creative Communications.
Prior to coming to CSUDH, Dr. Burkey worked for more than ten years as a professional journalist for a variety of news, education, entertainment, lifestyles, and business publications; spent eight years as a secondary school instructor, where he developed a distinguished journalism program for a Title I high school in a South-LA public school district; and has previously lectured at the University of Oregon and CSU Long Beach.
