Clinical Workshops

Sensorimotor

Sensorimotor Approaches to Develop Trunk & Motor Control of the Upper Extremity for Neurological Conditions

This course is designed to give participants basic knowledge for the development and the relationship of dynamic trunk stability and motor control in hemiplegic or hemiparetic upper extremities utilizing a variety of sensorimotor concepts and techniques.  How handling and facilitation techniques during the performance of occupations are applied in clinical practice to promote recovery of function following neurological damage.  Video analysis of patients, lab practice and client treatment sessions will be emphasized in the learning process.

Foundations to Hand Therapy

Foundations of Hand Therapy Practice in Occupational Therapy

This course covers the basic knowledge and skills necessary for entry-level practice of occupational therapy in the specialty area of hand therapy. The course content comprehensively provides a general foundation in understanding the evaluation, treatment, and management of common upper extremity diagnoses. Topics will include an overview of basic anatomy, physiology & pathology, stages of tissue healing, evaluation & treatment skills, modalities, orthosis fabrication (splinting), clinical decision-making, and appropriate documentation. The course format is designed to create a non-intimidating learning environment that combines both didactic and practical hands-on learning in an actual clinical setting.

OT Upper Extremity Orthosis Fabrication (Splinting) Workshop

Upper Extremity Orthosis Fabrication (Splinting)

This is a one-day interactive hands-on splinting course designed for an entry-level practitioner. The course is designed to improve the clinician’s comfort level and skill in the fabrication of common upper extremity static splints. The course comprehensively reviews basic upper extremity anatomy, stages of tissue healing, and pathology considerations. The different purposes for static, dynamic and static progressive splints will be discussed. Each participant will observe demonstrations followed by the opportunity to fabricate numerous custom static splints for common upper extremity diagnoses. Diagnosis considerations, and clinical decision-making will be reviewed. The course format is lab-intensive, but designed to create a non-intimidating learning environment. The course combines both didactic and practical hands-on learning in an actual clinical setting.  Registration will be limited to ensure optimal lab and mentoring opportunities. A comprehensive manual will also be provided.

Cardiac Workshop

Acute Care and ICU Rehabilitation Techniques for Occupational Therapists

This is a two-day interactive course that is designed for entry-level practitioners and fieldwork level 2 students entering the acute care setting. This course is designed to provide thorough information on the acute care setting and protocols for entry-level practitioners. The course will review basic information regarding acute care diagnosis including congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, COPD, sepsis, post op cardiac procedures as well as hands on techniques for Occupational Therapy treatments pertaining to acute care patients. The course will combine both didactic and practical hands on learning with a simulated acute care environment. The course will instruct on safe handling techniques for transferring critical care patients out of bed and initiating ADL performance in the ICU and acute care setting.

3D Printing Workshop

Introduction to 3-Dimensional Printing and Integration into Occupational Therapy Practice

This one-day course will provide information and hands-on experience of how to integrate 3D printing into OT practice. Participants will journey through the 3D printing process beginning with translating an idea into computer aided design (CAD) software, an introduction to slicing software, streamlined instructions on how to use 3D printers, information regarding 3D printing tools and filaments, and post processing techniques. Participants will go through the 3D printing process lead by the instructor and then have the opportunity to go through the printing process by themselves or with assistance as needed. The course includes discussions and case studies of how OT’s have been integrating 3D printing into their practice. Topics regarding diagnosis considerations, indications, contraindications, and precautions of using 3D printing will be discussed.

Medical Terminology

Medical Terminology for Occupational Therapy

This course provides the framework for understanding medical language and terminology used by occupational therapists and other health care professionals. Students will gain an understanding of the rules of building and analyzing medical terms from word origins and will learn correct pronunciation, definitions, and spelling for all of the body systems, major pathological conditions, common disorders, prescribed medications, and more.  Major course topics include the pronunciation, defining, and spelling of medical terminology, word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and connecting/combining forms, as well as interpreting common abbreviations, relating medical terms to structure and function, and recognizing major conditions, diseases and disorders affecting occupational performance.

The clinical practice of occupational therapy requires knowledge of the terminology underlying the conditions affecting the functional performance aspects of human occupation and will gain an understanding of the medical terms to the point where they can communicate with their clients, families and other healthcare practitioners.  The understanding of the terminology is essential for proper documentation and recording of the issues encountered in treatment for assessments, evaluation, progress notes and discharge summaries.

Introduction to Occupational Therapy

Foundations of Occupational Therapy

Foundations of Occupational Therapy course provides students an overview of the complex scope, philosophical foundation, history, areas of practice, professional and ethical roles and responsibilities, models of practice and service delivery, professional development, and career growth in occupational therapy.

The course also explores how occupational therapists develop and implement interventions for client populations across the lifespan in various practice settings. It involves examination of how concepts in occupational therapy becomes a means of directing a person’s participation in tasks selected to develop, maintain or restore skills in daily living. Students will use materials presented in lectures, in-class discussions, audio-visual materials, guest speakers, and written and oral assignments to meet the course objectives. NOTE: This workshop can be taken in lieu of the required 80 hours of volunteer/observation experience when applying to the program.
