Construction Suicide Prevention Week • In-Person and Online Webinar

Suicide prevention in the workplace, a topic of increasing concern for businesses. The presentation will include:

• General Statistics, including suicide rates by age, ethnicity, and occupation, and statistics within the LGBTQ+, veteran, and disabled communities
• Suicide Risk Factor/Warning Signs
• Protective Factors
• Suicide Risk Screening Tool Examples, including the ASQ-NIMH Toolkit, the PHQ- 9 (Patient Health Questionnaire), and Simple Questions
• SAFE-T (Suicide Assessment Five-Step Evaluation and Triage) - SAMHSA, including identifying risk factors, identifying protective factors, conducting suicide inquiries, determining levels/interventions, and documentation
• Resources for Safety Professionals

The presentation will include a question and answer session. This is a free virtual event designed to educate the construction workforce. The event is also open to contractors, small business owners, professional technical educators, businesses required to follow OSHA standards and anyone interested in creating a safer workplace.

Trenching & Shoring Stand Down

Trench Safety Stand Down 2024 • In-Person and Online Webinar

OSHA has made reducing trenching and excavation hazards the Agency's Priority Goal. Trench collapses, or cave-ins, pose the greatest risk to workers' lives. California State University Dominguez Hills OSHA Education Center, in partnership with Trench Shoring, will be hosting a stand-down to support the Trench Safety Stand Down and raise awareness on cave-ins prevention. During this event, we will provide valuable information to participants about current excavation requirements and safety procedures for working in trenches. 

Topics include:
• Top 10 mistakes made by contractors while excavating
• What are the must-have elements of an Effective Trenching and Excavation Shoring Program
• Tips on how to be more effective in implementing the fundamentals on the jobsite
• What is needed to have consistency on a daily basis on the jobsite with Trench and Excavation Safety
• Discussion and Q&A

National Safety Stand-Down: Fall Protection • In-Person and Online Webinar

Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction employees, accounting for 395 of the 1069 construction fatalities recorded in 2022 (BLS data). Those deaths were preventable. The National Safety Stand-Down raises fall hazard awareness across the country in an effort to stop fall fatalities and injuries.

Join Jeremy Trask from Commercial Scaffolding as he presents a fall prevention and protection workshop on strategies to effectively implement proper fall arrest systems for various worksites. Information related to the latest ANSI Z359.1-2020, “The Fall Protection Code”, including fall arrest anchorage types and classification will be discussed..

Pacific Coast Safety Fest

Pacific Coast Safety Fest is a safety and health training event that offers training classes related to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. The purpose of this training is to raise awareness concerning pertinent safety and health hazards and best work practices in the area where the training is being offered. The expected outcome of all OSHA training is related to the mission of OSHA that all workers return home safe each day. The Region 9 Education Centers have conveniently scheduled the Safety Fest courses so that students may enroll and attend one class per day.

Pacific Coast Safety Fest is a free virtual event designed to educate Region 9 workforce. The event is open to contractors, small business owners, professional technical educators, businesses required to follow OSHA standards, and anyone interested in creating a safer workplace. Course topics will include, but are not limited to: Health Hazard Awareness, Bloodborne Pathogens, Pandemic Illness Preparedness, and Fall Hazard Awareness.

OSHA Region IX Workers’ Voice Forum • Labor Rights Week

In partnership with Region 9 OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Centers and California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA)

Labor Rights Week is an annual observance held the week before Labor Day. The Mexican consulates and the U.S. Department of Labor have been collaborating for years to help ensure dignity, equity and justice for all workers. Join host OSHA San Francisco Regional Office and CSUDH, along with other Region 9 OTIECs for various discussions; come learn how to become an authorized OSHA Trainer to teach OSHA 10 and 30-Hour Training and discuss California’s Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) on Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) with Cal/OSHA.
